Apocalypse Now 8, Flamin’ Martyrs 1

Melrose – January 11, 2009 – For one afternoon, the Apocalypse Now looked like a talented team. Jason Allard beat the Matrys goaltender with a high wrist shot on the first shift of the game to open the scoring and Apocalypse didn’t look back. They scored 5 unanswered first half goals as they extinguished the Flamin’ Martys 8-1 on Sunday. The game also featured a rare penalty shot when Patrick Nikolaus grabbed the stick of a Matryr who was about to breakaway. Referee Craig Stapon called the penalty shot as time ran out in the second half which Jim Heim easily stopped. Notes: The focus at the end of the game was to try and feed the puck to Guy Sever as he needs just one point to hit the 300 point mark in his Apocalypse Now career. He will have to wait until the next game…Last year’s scoring leader, Allard has 7 goals this year but no assists...Jim Heim was facing the 9^th penalty shot of his career which is a new record. He has only been beat once in a game against the Assmen in 2004. The last game that included any penalty shots was against the B’Z in 2006.
