Apocalypse Now 5, Golden Geeks 5
Melrose – January 2, 2011: The Apocalypse Now players were relieved. They appeared to be on their way to their fourth consecutive loss after Jim Heim could not answer the bell due to a stomach flu and Bryan Finney filled in without goalie pads. Instead of sulking or quitting, Apocalypse Now rallied for an improbable 5-5 tie against the Golden Geeks. Patrick Nikolaus had much to do with that as he posted his first career hat-trick and the first hat-trick by any Apocalypse player since Jason Allard accomplished the feat on February 1, 2009.
"I'm just glad they didn't shoot high," Finney laughed when approached at the Pony Corral after the game, "I've never played goal before."
Slap Shots:
Rookie prospect, Andrew Clark was called in from the sidelines for the last minute of the game and preserved the tie...it was the first time that two goalies were used in one game since January/1998 when Desmond Miller and Leo Silva backstopped the team to a 5-4 win over the Grand Beach Beer Bellies. Miller was pulled after allowing all 4 goals in the first period and Leo, who was late for the game, came in to get the win...
Jim Heim's streak of 38 consecutive starts has ended. He last missed a game on December 30, 2007...Guy Sever forgot about the game. Rumour has it, he was playing the new X-Box spongee game.It is not known if he will be fined or disciplined...Nikolaus' new nickname is Hat-trick Patrick.
