Apocalypse Now 4, The Dukes 0

Valley Gardens   February 13, 2011 - “I can’t remember the last game that I saw everyone sweating like this afterwards” commented an ecstatic Jeff Wrobleski after a 4-0 schooling of the Dukes by Apocalypse Now. Those comments summed up a tremendous defensive effort by a team rarely known for their skill in the defensive zone. Backchecking, shot blocking, defensive hustle, it was all on display Sunday afternoon. Star scorer Guido Sever set the tone for everyone with his commitment to defense and incredible shot blocking. “I don’t think I crossed the Dukes blue line” he commented after the game. The media darling Apocalypse overcame a tentative couple of first shifts with youngsters Patrick Nikolaus and Jason Allard combining for the games first goal, followed by the red hot Myron Fiks pocketing yet another goal after an outstanding pass from the equally sizzling Jim Moore. A marvelous individual effort by Jason Allard led to a disputed goal putting the horsemen up 3-0 after the first period. Jim Moore was the recipient of more dazzling work by Jason Allard who out-hustled and out-worked at least three Dukes to set up Jim in the slot to finish off the scoring. Disciplined play took over after the Saturday meltdown. Obviously the message of team discipline was received by all as only one penalty was handed out to Apocalypse. The post game media scrum was marred by the Dukes calling out Jim Heim as “the luckiest goalie we played all year”. Bryan Wiebe was incensed at the lack of respect for the Apocalypse all time playoff leader in wins and shutouts. The enraged Wiebe had to be restrained by Jim Moore. Jeff Wrobleski was far kinder as he took the mike. “Did you guys see that performance by young Allard? I saw that kind of potential in him 14 years ago when we brought him up as a teenager and today we were rewarded with the kid’s game of his life”. Slap Shots Jim Moore’s goal was his 19th and moved him past legendary Joe Moore in all time playoff goals and into a tie with Myron Fiks, who also scored his 19th. The two are tied for 4th on the all time play-off goal list. Fiks’ point was his 41st which also moved him past Joe for 4th place in the all time play-off point list…Patrick notched his 2nd consecutive game winning goal…

Allard’s 3 points moved him into a 12th place tie with Rob B at 17…These teams met only once before; in the 2008-09 play-offs.
