Apocalypse 7, Grand Beach Beer Bellies 6 (OT)
Melrose (AP) – February 19, 2012 – After letting a big halftime lead slip through their fingers, it looked like Apocalypse Now was going to wilt under the playoff pressure and the second hand smoke from their arch rival Grand Beach Beer Bellies. But Guido Sever, who has seen just about everything in his sixteen spongee seasons, wouldn’t let them. Sever’s rebound goal, 15 seconds into overtime, lifted the Apocalypse to a 7-6 victory over the Bellies on Sunday night, and the B-side Champion title. After taking a commanding 5-1 lead in the first half, Apocalypse Now let the Bellies shoot at every opportunity in the second half until they were able to tie the game and force overtime. However, after winning the opening draw of OT, Jim Moore took the puck down the ice, let go his cannon of a slap shot, which came out to the opportunistic Sever who quickly put it in the back of the net. "That was an unbelievable game." Jim Heim said at the beer gardens, "One that I'll remember for a long, long time."
Slap Shots: This was the Apocalypse Now franchise's 90th play-off game.Their record is 43 wins and 47 losses...With his seven play-off points, Jim Moore moved passed Myron Fiks and Pete Pearson into third place in all-time play-off scoring with 47 points. He is only 6 points behind second place Sever...Jim Heim became the first Apocalypse goalie to get four wins in one postseason. In other years with four play-off wins, more than one goalie was utilized...Jason Allard won the play-off scoring title with 8 points. No player has scored more than 8 points in the play-offs in 21 years.
