Apocalypse Now 3, White Lightning 4 (Shootout)
Melrose - February 27, 2022: It was like old-time spongee. Duffle bags and T-shirts were on the line. The extra incentive to win was evident in the amped-up intensity, extra pushing and shoving, and scattered punches exchanged between the Apocalypse Now and White Lightning. The rough play led to several player ejections including the White Lightning goaltender. The Lightning were hanging onto a 3-2 lead at the time. With a few seconds remaining and the extra attacher, Kevin Wood tied the game with a slap shot on a nice pass from Bryan Wiebe who was making his first appearance this year. Overtime solved nothing and it was on to the shootout. Jason Allard scored on his first attempt but after the first round it was still tied. In the second round, Allard was stoned by the new Lightning goalie and Jim Heim was beat on a shot low stick side. The shot came before he had a chance to make his famous poke check. "We played well." Jeff Wrobleski said.
Slap Shots:Apocalypse Now has not won an A-Side Championship since the 1989-90 playoffs. They have gone to the A-Side Final 4 times and won twice and lost twice. The last loss was in the 2016-17 playoffs...The 38 penalty minutes was the most in a playoff game beating the 32 minutes versus Junk in 2011...Jim Heim was playing in his 75th consecutive playoff game in goal...After the Lightning took their 5th penalty, Kevin Wood was awarded a penalty shot which was unsuccessful. It was only the second penalty shot in the playoffs. Guido Sever was also unsuccesful on a shot against the Killer Bees in 1996-97...Bryan Wiebe notched two assists. It was his 3rd multi-point playoff game in his career...the sorrows were drowned at Spanky's after the game.
