1997-98

The Ironman, Robbie Moore reached a couple of longevity milestones in the 97-98 season. Rob’s Ironman streak passed the 100 consecutive game mark and in Game 8 Rob became the first player to play in 200 regular season games. In this same game, there was some very poor officiating, even by Old Ex standards. Apocalypse had taken only one minor penalty, then two players roughed it up and the ref suspended the game. Joe lost his cool at the snag and hurled the game-sheet across centre ice in frustration.

In Game 5, Joe Moore set up Jim Moore for the team’s 900th regular season goal. In the next game, Joe set up Jim for his 50th career regular season goal.

After starting the season with five consecutive wins, Apocalypse finished the season in a disappointing fourth place (8-5-1) in the 18th division. An early thaw moved the game to Pioneer Arena in late March. But it only postponed the inevitable. Instead of a best-of-three series, a one game knockout was held. And it was a knockout, we were stung by the Killer Bees, 6-0!

This was Mike Allard’s swan song in an Apocalypse jersey. After 209 games (including playoffs), Mike called it quits. He played long enough to team up with his son, Jason. Just before announcing his surprise retirement, Allard passed his arch rival Don Price to move into the top ten all-time regular season career scorers.
