Spongee Memories…
The eleventh year opened with two straight wins and much hope, as anything was better than the two wins in all of the previous season. The new season finished a respectable 6-8, fourth place in the 14th division. Rob Moore again led the way with three game winning goals. Jim Heim struggled to learn the goalie position, often getting caught watching games on the other rink as shots were fired his way.
This season was a new chapter for the team, not only were two of the original veterans no longer with the team, but new black jerseys were introduced, replacing the original ‘Blood-Red’ style sweater.
Game Nine was the franchise 150th regular season game. In this game, Jeff Wrobleski scored 2 goals and an assist to became the first player to reach the 200 point mark. In the next game vs. Superior Beings, Joe Moore set up Jeff for his 100th career goal.
There was a different playoff format, as Apocalypse was dumped two straight by the Sewer Rats in the A-Side, they were relegated to a C-Side single game elimination playoff. In what was named the ‘Hammer Cup’, Apocalypse won the quarter-final (4-1), then the semi-final (5-3), only to disappoint Hammer and lose in the final game (6-3).
Roster: Veterans: Rob, Joe and Jim Moore, Jeff Wrobleski, Mike Allard (injured), Jim Heim, Greg and Grant Kostal, and the return of the Hammer. Rookies: Paul Chateau, Marcel McIvor, and John Sereduik.
