2025-26
It
was a chaotic year that began when Melrose Community Club decided to part ways
with the Kildonan Spongee League. Bobby J. scrambled to salvage the season by
obtaining ice time at several other locations around the city. It meant no beer
gardens for the playoffs and a lot more driving around the city. It was a disastrous start for Apocalypse Now
as they began the year with four straight losses which hasn’t been done since
the inaugural season of 1983-84. They were also shut-out for 2 straight games
which has never happened before. But then, Michael Moore and Riley Colpitts
joined the team and things turned around quickly. They won 7 of their next 9
games and finished the season with a 7-6-0 record. Only 13 games were played as
the Wolves defaulted a game.
A few highlights and notes from the season
include:
-
There were 8 rookies on the team this year (9 if you include Jay
Lamb but he did play one game as a stand-in in 2015-16). Previously, there has never been more than 4
rookies in one year and that only happened twice.
-
14 players recorded a point in the regular season which tied a
record going back to the inaugural season of 1983-84. Rookie Bryce Dupont had
an assist in the playoffs which set the record for “Most Players With A Point in One Season
Including Playoffs’ at 15.
-
After 30 seasons and 341 games, Jim Heim hung up his spongee boots. He had not missed a game since January 13,
2013.
-
Jason Allard passed Jim Moore in career points scored but remains
in 5th spot as Michael Moore passed both of them to move into 4th
place.
-
Guido Sever returned for a 29th season and scored a
goal which moved him into 2nd place all alone in goals scored (55
goals behind Jeff Wrobleski).
-
Rob Moore returned for his 42nd season and played 2
games scoring 2 goals.
-
New jerseys were revealed that replicated the original jerseys
from the 80’s.
-
Michael Moore won the scoring title (35 points) for the sixth year
in a row and ninth time in total.
The Play-Offs
With
no beer gardens, it was a sober determined group that entered the playoffs. Michael
Moore and Riley Colpitts were unavailable for Game One versus the Warpigs, but the secondary scoring showed up and Apocalypse
came back to win 6-4. It was another
come from behind win in Game Two versus the Wheat Kings with a narrow 3-2 win.
The next game was also close as they defeated the Whalers 3-2 to advance to the
A-Side Final versus Bryan Finney and the Old Beezers.
It was a game that will be remembered as one of the greatest of all time.
Rookie goalie, Scott ‘Money’ Loszchuk was spectacular
as he backstopped the team to a 2-1 win.
It was the first A-Side Championship since the 1989-90 season when the Red
Helicopter Jerseys were last worn.
