2021-22
The Apocalypse came in the form of a pandemic and it looked like the end. The 2020-21 season was cancelled as everyone was forced to lock themselves inside and hide from Covid-19. But Apocalypse Now wouldn't go down in defeat and came back for a 38th season. Due to unseasonably warm weather, the season didn't get started until January 2, 2022 but when the sponge puck dropped, it was a relief. Due to the late start the season was shortened to 12 games and the bench was also short. Myron Fiks, Jim Moore, Tristan Carlson, and Bryan Wiebe were unable to answer the bell. Guido Sever and Patty Nikolaus also missed some games due to injury. Only 7 players scored goals throughout the season which tied the record for Least Players set in 1994-95. But in the end, the Horsemen were able to compile a 6-5-1 winning record.
Game One saw the debut of rookie Kevin Wood. He scored the first 6 goals of the year breaking the record for most consecutive goals scored. The previous record was 4 goals held by 6 different players. He also set the Rookie Record for the Fastest 10 Goals from the Start of a Season when he got his 10th in Game 4 versus the Misfits.. Other highlights of the season included Rob Moore being the first player to play 500 regular season games; Jim Heim pushed his Ironman Streak to 146 games including playoffs; Michael Moore had 2 Hat-Tricks to move into First Place all alone on the Most Regular Season Hat-Trick List with 26; Bryan Finney was assessed a penalty, his first in 5 years; and Guido Sever has now played in 25 seasons.
The Play-Offs
It was a great playoff run for Apocalypse Now. It began with a revenge game against the Belgian Club Crusaders who eliminated them in the 2020 Playoffs. Jeff Wrobleski led the way to victory scoring his 50th playoff goal. Pete Tavares scored the winning goal in Game Two versus the Whalers and it took a shootout to beat the Swafflers in Game Three. Jim Heim used the poke-check to prefection. It was on to the A-Side Final versus White Lightning, which was delayed a week due to bad weather. This allowed Bryan Wiebe to play as he was back in town. The game was penalty filled and set a record for the most penalty minutes in one playoff game (38). Pete Tavares and Michael Moore were ejected from the game and unable to lend their talents when the game ended up in a shootout and another miracle season was not to be. But it was a good run proving that Apocalypse Now is still a world-class spongee team.
