Spongee Memories…

2011-12

Despite a bad knee, Myron Fiks answered the bell for the start of the 2011-12 Spongee season. Unfortunately, his knee gave out on him in his 5^th game on January 8, 2012 and his season was over. It is hopeful; he will be back in the line-up next year. As a replacement for Myron, Michael Moore was given the call up. He is the son of Apocalypse Hall-of-Famer, Joe Moore and he made his presence felt early and often. He scored 6 goals and added 2 assists in 4 regular season games and added another 4 points in 3 play-off games. He should bring excitement for years to come to the Apocalypse Nation.

Apocalypse Now played with confidence and competence throughout the season finishing with a 10-1-3 record, their best finish in 10 years (since the 2001-02 season). After playing to a tie 3 times in the first 5 games, they found their legs and put together a winning streak that lasted 9 games and the rest of the entire regular season. They controlled the tempo of almost every game.  They slowed it down whenever possible.

The success carried over into the play-offs as they pulled off an overtime win in the B-Side Final against the Grand Beach Beer Bellies to capture their first championship in 8 years.

Other notable occurrences in the season included:

· Jason Allard scored the season opening goal for the 3^rd time in his career which ties the record held by Jeff Wrobleski, Myron Fiks and Joe Moore. He also had the first 4-goal game of his career and hit the 100 regular-season point mark for his career. He also won the scoring title with 27 points. MVP?

· Tristan Carlson passed the 50 career game mark

· Jim Heim played in his 200^th regular season game

• Finney missed his first regular season game since he was signed to the team on December 7, 2008, a streak of 39 games. The current Ironman is Rob Moore who has played 58 consecutive games since January 16, 2008
• Jim Moore scored the 250^th point of his career.

· Bryan Wiebe tied Jeff Wrobleski’s record of scoring at least one goal in the first 6 games of the season.

The Play-Offs

Jeff Wrobleski missed the entire play-off season for the first time in his career. Unfortunately, it conflicted with a winter vacation. He had only missed 2 play-off games in total in the last 29 years. Despite missing their captain and most vocal player, Apocalypse Now won the B-side Championship. The only loss in the play-offs was a disappointing 4-3 edging by the Ice Holes. In the final game, Guy Sever’s rebound goal, 15 seconds into overtime, lifted the Apocalypse to a 7-6 victory over the Beer Bellies and the title. It will be a relaxing off-season.
