Spongee Memories…
2009-10
The season seemed to fly by. The reason for this is probably because a total of only 16 games were played in the campaign. There were no pre-season games and 3 regular season contests were cancelled due to weather and no-shows. The only saving grace for Apocalypse Now was going far into the play-offs to eventually lose to the Ratz in the B-side finals.
Including the default wins, Apocalypse Now ended the season with a 11-2-1 record. After winning the first 5 games of the
season, (their longest winning streak in 9 years) they ran into the Elmwood Elkhorns, who burst their bubble with a 9-4 drubbing. The Elkhorns went on to win the division and the A-side. No
hat-tricks were scored in the entire season.
Other notable occurrences in the season included:
· Tristan Carlson returned from a knee injury that forced him to miss almost all of the 2008-09 season
· Jason Allard scored his 50th career point in a 9-3 win over Clockwork Orange.
· Jim Moore passed the 200 game milestone, Guido Sever passed the 150 game milestone and Patrick Nikolaus passed the 100 game milestone.
· Jim Heim extended his Apocalypse record by posting career shut-out number 8
· Myron Fiks won the scoring title for the 4th time and hit the 25 point mark for the 5th time in his career.
· There were no hat tricks scored all season.
The Play-Offs
The Play-Off Weekend began on Friday night with a dominating performance by Old and Stoned. The Apocalypse loss was blamed on the poor ice conditions. Things went better from there, however, as they pulled off wins against the Russian Red Army, WBC United and District Five and advanced to the B-side final. The final was a nail-biter and unfortunately a late goal by the Ratz gave them the championship.
