Excitement was in the air when one of the four
horsemen of the Apocalypse, Mike Allard came out of retirement. After missing seven seasons and exactly 100
regular season games, Mike quickly re-established himself as one of the game’s
all-time great defensemen by scoring a career high 10 points. Myron Fiks scored four times in Game One on
his way to his second consecutive scoring championship. Myron set a new goal-scoring streak of 10 consecutive
games, surpassing the age-old record set by Gary Ledrew. Apocalypse Now tied two
games in a row for the first time in 21 years before suffering through an 8
game losing streak, breaking all futility records. Another club
record was set for the most pounds of wings consumed in one season. In search of the hottest wings, taste tests
were conducted repeatedly at both Pony Corral and Boogies. Other milestones reached during the season
were Guido’s 100th career game and 100th career
assist. Jim Heim played in his 150th
career game while Jim Moore scored his 200th point.
Game Fourteen of the regular season was a
dandy. Yogic Flyers and Apocalypse Now
combined for what was easily the most exciting game in years. It was a schedule maker’s dream as the two
last place teams met in the last game of the season to determine who would
finish in the basement. Rarely do both teams pull their goalie, but a tie was as good as a loss for
Apocalypse. And so, with Heimy on the
bench, leading scorer Myron Fiks scored the tie-breaking goal with 1:10 left in
the game. The Flyers then pulled their
goalie to try to avoid last place, but Apocalypse hung on for the 6-5
victory. With the win, an eight-game
losing streak was finally snapped and Apocalypse avoided the team record for
the least wins in a season. Apocalypse
has never finished in last place and with the win, this was avoided for at
least one more year. The winning goal was Fiks’ third of the night as
the Horsemen rallied from three goals down with 8 minutes left. The Flyers led 5-2 late in the third period
before the Apocalypsers scored twice in a 30-second span to ignite their
biggest rally ever.
A league decision to move Apocalpyse up to their
highest ranking in 15 years, (the 9th division), triggered a 3-9-2
record, barely avoiding last place. The
longest losing streak in 23 years ruined an otherwise balmy winter. The playoffs were a blur as the Pylons
pounded Apocalypse into submission in two quick games.
