2004-05

In the tenth and final game of the longest exhibition season in franchise history, Apocalypse Now was involved in yet another infamous brew-ha-ha.  Usually these events are saved for the regular season, or better yet, the playoffs.  It all started when Rob Moore broke the Eh Team goalie’s bid for a shutout with 58 seconds left.  This riled the goalie who decided to take his frustration out with a vicious two-hander on Jeff Wrobleski’s arm.  In an attempt to tie the score, Rob’s stick came up and rearranged the facial features of #44, and suddenly things were out of control.  When it was all said and done, Rob was handed an indefinite suspension (in the style of Todd Bertuzzi).  The suspension included the entire regular season and playoffs.  Isn’t it ironic that just months earlier in the NHL, Bertuzzi (#44) was suspended for jumping Moore, while in this classic case of revenge, Moore sticks #44?

 

Apocalypse Now established early supremacy in Division 10 with a 3-0 start to the season.  Bryan Wiebe filled in for the ailing Jim Heim for the second consecutive season-opener.  “Just 49 more wins and I’ll catch Heimie,” Bryan predicted.  The fast start included a 14-0 Heimie shutout in Game Three.  In this game, Guido tied Mike Sanderson and Jeff Wrobleski for the club record of most points in one game (9). This game helped Guido set a couple of other records, he broke an 18 year-old club record for the fastest 10 points from the start of the season. Three games beats the old mark set in 86-87 by Rob Haithwaite and Gary LeDrew (5 games). Guido scored his 200th point in this game, which is the second fastest to 200. (88 to Pete’s 77).

 

Milestones and Memories of 2004-05:

  • Jim Heim became the only goalie in Apocalypse Now history to record 50 wins
  • The comeback player of the year, Patrick Nikolaus, returned after missing 58 games
  • Jim Moore became the 5th player to score 100 or more goals. Family and friends were not on hand to witness the event.  Coincidentally, Rob Moore notched the 100th assist of his career when he set up Jim for the historic goal
  • On the way to his first scoring title, immoral Myron moved past the immortal Jeff Solylo into 8th all-time career scoring
  • Apocalypse Now won their 300th game. (147-128-25) and scored their 1500th goal
  • Rob Moore passed Gary LeDrew into sixth place on the all-time scoring race while also becoming the first player to play in 300 regular season games
  • Myron ended the season with an eight game goal-scoring streak.  He will tie the all-time record of nine set by Gary LeDrew in Game One of 2005-06
  • Guido was hobbled by a late-season hamstring injury, which led to him missing the last game of the season, the annual footrace, the scoring race, and being able to move in the playoffs

 

The final record was a respectable third place 8-5-1.  It had been two years (February, 2003) since any team had shutout Apocalypse, before they fell 5-0 in Game One of the playoffs to the eventual A-Side Champion Tumbleweeds.  It was a two-game sweep into next year country for the hometown heroes.
