Spongee Memories…
2003-04
Two longtime Apocalypse Ironman records came to an end during the season. The most significant era ended when Rob Moore’s consecutive games played was halted at 216 in a row (179 consecutive regular season games plus another 37 playoff games). Rob had not missed a game since the 1990-91 season!! Finally, Rob had something else to do. Jeff Wrobleski is the new current Ironman, but it will take him another 8 years to break Rob’s record.
A Steinbach snowstorm ended the longest Apocalypse consecutive goalie-games
played streak in history. The season
opening tie would have been Jim Heim’s 50th consecutive game in
goal. Bryan Wiebe set Jim at ease in the
11-4 loss that followed.
Do you remember…
· The bloodied little Assman carried off the Gardens’ ice following Jimmy’s viscous elbow.
· Guido Sever and Curt Burnett losing their cool to the Assmen, combining for a club record 35 penalty minutes in one game.
· The Green Briar.
· The Bloodshot goon on day parole, chasing the referee around Pioneer Arena.
· Joe Moore’s Yogic Flyer eyeball skewer. (The Flyers got even later in the season, giving Joe an early spring break)
· Jeff Wilkie’s first ever career penalty in the Semi-Final vs Blue Devilz. Jeff got retribution for that flimsy call when he was ejected from the Final for roughing.
· Seven different players scoring in a 7-2 win over Reckless Faith.
· Jim Heim’s shutout against Bloodshot, the third of his career.
· Career season goal #200 (Jeff Wrobleski), #100 (Guy Sever),& #50 (Myron Fiks)
· Pounding the Blue Devilz with 10 goals (the only double-digits for the season).
· Wilkie was awarded a goal in a 5-1 win over the not-so Grea-a-at Frosted Flakes.
· A point separated Apocalypse from the basement as they have never finished in last place.
· Bryan Wiebe scoring a timely goal to send the first Semi-Final game to shootout where Rob Burnett and Jim Moore ended it with huge shoot-out goals.
· For only the second time in 15 years, double overtime was needed as Jim Heim stopped 8 of 9 shoot-out tries while Myron scored to send Apocalypse to the finals.
· Heimy was undefeated in the playoffs (3-0) with a sparkling 2.66 average.
· Guido scoring four goals in the Finals to lead Apocalypse Now to their first-ever B-side championship. The first taste of playoff champagne since 1990!!!!!!
