Spongee Memories…
Pete Pearson made a wildly successful return to spongee with a hat trick in his first game back. After 7 years in retirement, Pearson came out flying, registering a goal on his first shift. Apocalypse Now had played 102 season games since Pistol Pete’s last appearance. Less than a week earlier Mario Lemieux also came out of retirement, but Pete’s game was much more spectacular.
Rob Burnett tied a club record in Game 5 by scoring 4 consecutive goals in an 11-2 win.
Game 9 saw the debut of the new green jerseys, while the double header to close the season had Apocalypse score a record 24 goals in one afternoon! (8-1W, 16-1W) The last game of the season set a record of the most players getting a goal in one game (8). Only one player dressed did not score, - Pete. Usually the rest of the team fails to score while Pete scores hat tricks. Guido Sever netted his 50th career goal in this game. It was the second fastest 50 goals, taking Guido only 41 games.
Jeff Wrobleski won the team scoring race, giving him the crown in three different decades!!
After an 8-3-3 record, Apocalypse bowed out of the playoffs in the A-Side semi-final to the Golden Geeks, two games to one. Jim Moore missed the only win, Game One because of a wedding social (his). Guido tied a playoff record with three consecutive goals, while Myron assisted all three, tying another playoff record for consecutive assists.
"Why does this loss bug me so much?" Bryan Wiebe asked his beer at Boogies afterward, "Get over it, this is only spongee…but, man!"
