Valley Gardens – January 16, 2011: Sponge hockey rivals, Apocalypse Now and Grand Beach Beer Bellies met for the 20th time (including 2 play-off games) in their long and storied histories. The rivalry has cooled slightly as they haven’t met in 4 years but things picked up right where they left off. The Beer Bellies dominated early on a snow-covered ice surface and cruised to a 7-3 win on Sunday afternoon. “All we had to do was shoot,” Jeff Wrobleski said, “The Smokin’ Goalie didn’t even have a goalie stick.” Slap Shots: In 18 regular season games, Apocalypse now has outscored the Beer Bellies, 100 – 96. …the first time they met was in the 1995-96 season and Apocalypse Now was routed 12-1.
