REGULAR SEASON
Game 1 Apocalypse Now 7, Reapers 6
OLD EX - January 6, 2006 – The Apocalypse Sponge Hockey team kicked off its
season last night with a 7-6 home victory over the Reapers. The Reapers came
out strong, but ultimately were unable to keep up with the revitalized
Horsemen. Last years scoring champion, Myron Fiks of the Apocalypse Now turned
in a vintage performance scoring 4 times. With the Reapers on their heels for
the majority of the third period, they were unable to produce any significant
offense. Late Hits: Fiks scored the team’s opening goal of the season,
extending his goal scoring streak to 9 games, tying the age old record set by
Gary Ledrew. Fiks also scored the winning goal in the
third period… Mike Allard came out of retirement and played his first game
since the 1997-98 season, an absence of 7 years. He obviously had retired much
too early based on his stellar performance in this game.

Game 2
Apocalypse Now 2, B’Z 2
OLD EX - January 8, 2006 –In a regular season contest that resembled a play-off
game, Jim Heim made two penalty shot saves and the Apocalypse Now notched a
consolation point in the standings as they tied the B’Z ,
2-2. Myron Fiks set a new record for consecutive games with at least one goal
scored as he banged in his 5th of the season. It was a penalty filled battle
that saw Guy Sever also awarded a penalty shot after a scuffle with the B’Z
defenseman. He broke in on the big goaltender, faked to his left and lifted a
backhander that was easily stopped. Mike Allard commented after the game that
“We are known as the Cardiac Kids, but for the wrong reason” referring to the
lofty average age of the team. Late Hits: Patrick Nikolaus arrived at
the game from an all-night party but showed little effects from the
intoxication…With the 2 penalty shots, Heimie now
shares the record of the most penalty shots against (8) in a career with
Nikolaus...Myron also joined the growing list of players with the record for the
fastest 5 goals in a season.

Game 3 Apocalypse Now 4 Pylons 4
OLD EX – January 12, 2006 - Jim Heim was furious at
the final whistle. But his team mates knew that the ‘Son of Ruggles’
referee always has a bad call saved for the right moment. This time it was late
in the game when Patrick Nikolaus received a questionable goalie interference
penalty late in the third and the Pylons proceeded to tie the game on the power
play. Patrick questioned the call and received an additional 10 minutes.
Apocalypse had jumped out to a 4-0 lead midway through the third, but just when
they thought the game was in hand, the Pylons battled back. Late Hits: Apocalypse has now tied two
games in a row; it has been 21 years since they have had back to back ties…Joe
Moore now leads the team with 5 game tying goals… Sunday’s game vs. the
Carnivores will be the G-Man’s 100th regular season game.

Game 4 Apocalypse 3 Carnivores 6
VALLEY GARDENS – January 15, 2006 - Two minutes in,
the Carnivores found themselves up 3-0. With this early lead, they coasted to a
6-3 victory. It was only the first loss of the year for Apocalypse, but at the
same time it has developed into a three game winless streak. “We need to go to
a passing clinic,” Zeddy remarked after Apocalypse
had a record number of give-aways. “Being humbled might be just what this team
needs to kick start a winning streak,” Daddy Warbecks
said to his beer after the game. Late
Hits: Myron was held off the score sheet for the first time since February
15, 2004 against the Yogic Flyers. He had registered a least one point in all
16 games that he played since that time.

Game 5 Apocalypse Now 7, War Party 3
OLD EX – January 20, 2006 - War Party came
out flying taking the play to Apocalypse early. Building a 3-1 lead in the
second, they were threatening to run away with it, that is until Myron Fiks
snapped out of his trance and slapped War Party with five goals and an assist.
Five goals is a personal best for Myron, while the 6 points was also the
greatest offensive output in Myron’s seven year spongee
career. Myron also had a 6 point night back in 1999-00, his rookie season vs. Mofo. Late Hits:
Mike Allard also contributed his greatest career offensive output. Mike had 3
assists which tied his personal best from the 94-95 season vs. the Cyclones.
Mike also had a 3 point night back in 85-86 vs. the Mercenaries.

Game 6 Killer Bees 7 Apocalypse Now 3
VALLEY GARDENS – January 21, 2006 - Apocalypse Now
came out blazing with three goals in the first period, but the Killer Bees were
patient. They stung Apocalypse with three goals late in the second period and
dominated the rest of the way for a solid 7-3 rout. “B Division is looking good
already,” Jim Heim commented to a quiet post-game dressing room. Late Hits: With Darren Warbeck’s assist
on Myron’s goal, he has already moved into a tie on the career assist list with
the legendary Bill Kerr…People are starting to question Sever’s
decision to play double duty for Kiss Army and Apocalypse as he is definitely
struggling. After 6 games last year,
Guido was sitting with 16 points compared to only 8 points this year.

Game 7 Carnivores 6, Apocalypse Now 4
OLD EX – January 29, 2006 – The Carnivores
extended their rival's misery and strengthened their position for an A-side
finish. Despite a goal and 2 assists
from Jim Moore,
Apocalypse Now lost their second straight.
"We had a decent first period and then we made soft plays, misreads
on 2-on-3 situations, and next thing you know we are down 3-0." Moore said
after the game. Apocalypse was able to
close the gap to 4-3 but could not get the equalizer when it was needed. Snow
was falling the entire game which also made things difficult for the old
guys. Late Hits: After the game, the Apocalypse team held a 10-minute
players-only meeting but no one attended…With the win, the Carnivores (4-4-0)
moved into a 4-way tie for second place in the division with the Reapers, B’Z
and War Party.…With his assist, Mike Allard passed Grant Kostal
and moved into 12th place in all-time scoring.

Game 8 Killer
Bees 6, Apocalypse Now 0
OLD EX – February 1, 2006 – The Apocalypse
Now thought they had played as badly as they possible could. They were wrong.
The Horsemen have been outscored 19-7 in their past
three games by the Carnivores and the Killer Bees.
"We thought the bottom was hit three nights ago
and tonight we found a way to go lower," said Apocalypse goalie, Jim Heim
after a 6-0 loss to the Killer Bees on Wednesday night. "We've seen
China." It was the Apocalypse’s worst loss since a
8-1 defeat to the Yogic Flyers on February 15, 2004 and the first time they
were shutout since a 9-0 thrashing by Frostbite on February 8, 2003. Late Hits: Apocalypse played with no spares but
held their own for 2 periods before giving up 4 goals in the third…Myron was
given a penalty for hooking; his first penalty in the regular season since
January 7, 2004 against the Reckless Faith…Inside sources are saying that Bryan
Wiebe was named to the Olympic Sponge Hockey team and is currently in Turin, Italy.

Game 9 War Party 7, Apocalypse Now 6
OLD EX – February 3, 2006 – Jim Moore had a
feeling the Apocalypse Now were going to snap their three-game losing streak as
he flew in from Calgary. But he was wrong.
Myron Fiks had 4 goals and Mike Allard had 3 assists
but the Apocalypsers could not beat the War Party on
Friday night as they fell 7-6. "Some nights you feel like you can't
lose," Moore said. "I dunno what
happened.”The War Party moved into second place and within eight points of the
first-place Killer Bees in the 9th Division.
"It's a big loss. I can't argue that,"
Apocalypse defenseman Darren Warbeck said. Late Hits: Apocalypse Now
are 0-3 without Bryan Wiebe on defense...Fiks has scored 4 or more goals 3
times this season.

Game 10 The B’Z 4, Apocalypse Now 3
OLD EX –
February 5, 2006 - Patrick Nikolaus was more concerned about team consistency
than breaking out of a personal slump. Nikolaus snapped a 9-game scoring
drought with a goal off of a rebound of Jeff Wrobleski’s
shot as The B’Z beat Apocalypse Now 4-3 on Superbowl
Sunday afternoon. “We played lousy again”, he muttered as the team lost its
fifth straight game. Late Hits: Myron Fiks registered one assist which
was his 20th point of the year…3 of the next 4 opponents of Apocalypse have
worse records than they do.

Game 11 The Pylons 4, Apocalypse Now 2
OLD EX – February 9, 2006 –Apocalypse Now played like a team that was
distracted. The Pylons scored goals when they needed to, including an empty
netter, and beat the embattled Apocalypsers 4-2
Thursday night. Darren Warbeck was pressed into action when Jim Heim returned
to Steinbach to join his wife for the birth of their first child. He was making
his first Spongee appearance in goal since February
8, 2005 against the Goodfellas. "It's kind of
tough for him, he hasn't been in a spongee game this
season and he plays against a team that shoots the puck well," Apocalypse defensman Mike Allard said. "He had a couple of tough
breaks, and a goal like the one that went in off a shin pad is the kind that can
take away your confidence." The loss was the Horsemen’s sixth straight. Late Hits: Allard’s goal was his first
in 8 years…Apocalypse has never finished last in its 23 year history…The good
news for Apocalypse fans: Heimie now won't miss a
playoff game.

Game 12 Yogic Flyers 8,
Apocalypse Now 7
OLD EX – February 11, 2006 – The Yogic Flyers
stuck it to the Apocalypse Now again, as if they weren't down enough. The Flyers scored with just over a minute
remaining in the game to secure a victory Saturday night that extended the
Apocalypse losing streak to seven games. Guy Sever had a goal and an assist in
a fast-paced first period and added two more goals before he was done, but the
Flyers held on to beat the Apocalypse 8-7 in the first match-up of the season
between two of the worse teams in the WSPHL. ``We've hit rock bottom,''
Apocalypse forward Myron Fiks said. ``The easy thing to do now is obviously to
start pointing fingers. I think everybody just needs to take a look at their
commitment to the team.'' Late Hits: The 8 goals against were the
most Apocalypse gave up since a 9-9 tie with the Reapers on Jan 15, 2005. And
their four-goal first period was the team's best since scoring five in a 7-4
win over the Pylons on Jan 26, 2005…With a goal and two assists, Jeff Wrobleski
hit the 20 point mark for the year.

Game 13 Reapers 3, Apocalypse
Now 1
OLD EX – February 17, 2006 –The return of
Bryan Wiebe wasn’t enough to turn around the fortunes of the struggling Apocalypse
Now. Despite dominating in the offensive zone most of the night, they couldn’t
beat a tough goalie and fell 3-1 to the Reapers. Jim Moore had a half dozen
chances to score but blamed it on his stick. “I forgot my stick at home,” he
said. The win moved the Reapers into 2nd
place on the A-side. Late Hits:
Apocalypse set a record last game for the longest losing streak. The have now extended the streak to 8 games
which beats the record of 6 games in 1983-84…If Apocalypse loses the next game,
they will tie the team record for the fewest wins in a year; 2 in 1992-93. If they win, they will avoid a last place
finish and will likely meet the Pylons in the play-offs.

Game 14 Apocalypse Now 6, Yogic
Flyers 5
OLD EX – February 18, 2006 –Myron Fiks scored
the tiebreaking goal with 1:10 left in the third period, leading the Apocalypse
Now to a 6-5 victory Saturday night over the Yogic Flyers. With the win, Apocalypse snapped an
eight-game losing streak and avoided finishing in last place for the first time
in their history. The goal was Fiks’ third of the night as the Horsemen rallied
from three goals down. The Flyers led
5-2 late in the second period, then the Apocalypsers
scored twice in a 30-second span to ignite their biggest rally since 1989
against the Icepicks. Late Hits: Defenseman Darren Warbeck
had the second two-goal game of his young spongee
career for Apocalypse. The first was
against the Reapers in the 2004-05 season…The assist on the game winning goal
was Jim Moore’s 200th career point.
The achievement almost went unnoticed at the Pony Coral after the
game…Mike Allard enjoyed a career year finishing with ten points. His previous best offensive numbers were nine
points in 1991-92.

PLAYOFFS
Game 1 Pylons
8, Apocalypse Now 2
OLD EX – February 22, 2006 –The Pylons scored
with 14 seconds left in the first period to cap a five-goal period and lift
them to an eventual 8-2 victory over the punchless
Apocalypse Now. “They just had their way with us,”said
Jim Moore who broke the shut-out with a goal in the second period. “I’ve never
been so humiliated.” The babyboomer team was simply
outplayed by a Pylon team that is younger, stronger, faster, and more athletic.
“Yeah, I’d say we took this one up the poop shooter,” said Darren Warbeck. Late Hits: Guy Sever was called for a 5
minute major in the second period after drawing blood from a Pylon’s nose…
Warbeck was playing in his first play-off game for Apocalypse…This was
Apocalypse Now’s worse loss since a 10-1 drubbing at the hands of the Rhinos in
2002. Apocalypse was able to rebound from that loss with a win the following
night.

Pylons
Bring Out The Brooms
Game 2 Pylons 6, Apocalypse Now 2
OLD EX – February 23, 2006 – For the
second straight year, Apocalypse Now was swept out of the play-offs in the
first round. Last year it was the Tumbleweeds. This year the Pylons handed
Apocalypse another series sweep with a 6-2 victory on Thursday night. The
Pylons scored a few seconds after the puck was dropped but Apocalypse didn’t
panic as they played hard and fiery. For most of the 1st period the Apocalypse
put on perhaps their most dominating forechecking
performance of the season as they kept the surprisingly high powered Pylons
bottled up in their own zone. Late in the period, Jeff Wrobleski fired a laser
from the point that found the twine to even the score.
At the start of the 2nd, the Pylons fired a shot from the slot that beat Jim
Heim to give them a 2-1 advantage. After this goal, the Pylons started to
steamroll and the pucks started to fill the net. "We just couldn't generate
any sustained offence," Jim Moore said afterwards. Guy Sever had his own
theory, “Not enough blood was spilled this year."
Late Hits: Apocalypse was playing without Myron Fiks. The team’s leading
scorer had a dinner…This is the third time in four years that Apocalypse have
been swept in a first round play-off series…Apocalypse has vied for the B-side
Championship just eight times in its 23 year history; going to the finals three
times and winning it once (2003-04)… The annual team race was held after the
game and Sever reclaimed his title. Bryan Wiebe was a close second. Despite
high hopes, Mike Allard came up empty.
