REGULAR SEASON

Game 1:  Apocalypse Now 5, Bad Guys 4

Old Ex - January 5, 2005 – It's exactly what the Apocalypse Now had in mind for their 2004-05 season opener, a game to establish some early supremacy in Division 10. Although, Apocalypse Now sure didn't envision Jim Heim coming down with the flu, Joe Moore and Grant Truthwaite having other plans or Rob Moore being suspended.  Wednesday’s game saw the Bad Guys take a lead of 2-0 as they took advantage of Apocalypse’s lack of a goaltender. Bryan Wiebe filled in admirably without the benefit of goalie equipment, but the Bad Guys seemed to be on their way to an easy win.  Then again, this Apocalypse team does not know the meaning of the word quit. Ignited by Myron Fiks, they scored 4 unanswered goals in the 3rd period including the winner with just 7 seconds left.  Late Hits: It was an extremely cold night with the temperature dipping down to -45 degrees including the windchill…Bryan Wiebe was playing in his 3rd career game in goal. His record is now 1-1-1. He said, “Just 49 more wins and I’ll catch Heimie.”

Game 2 Apocalypse Now 6, Grand Beach Beer Bellies 4

Old Ex  - January 8, 2005 – Apocalypse and Grand Beach have a long history as spongee rivals and another chapter was added at Old Ex on Saturday morning.  After 15 games, their record stood at 7-7-1 with 80 goals for and 80 goals against.  The dead-heat was broken when Guido scored 4 goals, and Patrick added two including the winner in a 6-4 romp. “I love scoring on this team,” Guido reminisced about his record 7 goal performance in the last game of the 2003 season.  Today Guido tied a club record for the fastest 5 goals from the start of a season, two games!!   Jimmy Heim was happy to notch a win in his first start of the season, his 47th career win, inching him ever closer to the “Magic 50” wins.  “It’ll be our turn on the tiny Garden ice next time!” the Beer Belly goaltender proclaimed.   LATE HITS:  The comeback player of the year, Patrick Nikolaus, has returned after missing 58 regular season games.  Pete Pearson holds the record for the longest lay-off, 102 games.

Game 4  Tumbleweeds 7, Apocalypse Now 3

Old Ex  - January 15, 2005 – Apocalypse expected to lose. The team’s chances of victory were effectively scuppered after Guy Sever announced that he would be sitting out Saturday’s games. The Tumbleweeds struck early and often and handed Apocalypse their first loss of the season. Late Hits: Mike Sanderson was called up as a last minute replacement for Guido.  It was his 1st game since February 9th, 2002, an absence of 34 regular season games… This was Apocalypse Now's 300th regular season game. Game 5  Apocalypse Now 9, Reapers 9

Old Ex - January 15, 2005 – After a brief beer at Boss-Q’s Apocalypse returned for the second game of their doubleheader against the Reapers. It was a high scoring affair with a white-knuckle finish. The Reaper defenceman  blasted a shot past Apocalypse netminder Jim Heim late in the third period to pull the Reapers back from a two goal deficit into a 9-9 tie.  Late Hits: With the unassisted goal, Myron moves past the immortal Jeff Solylo into 8th all-time…  Darren pulls into a tie on the career list with Hammer, although Darren has played only 3 games, 36 less than Bakaluk

Game 6  Tumbleweeds 6, Apocalypse Now 2

OLD EX - January 22, 2005 – Bad decisions, bad passes, no hustle, no muscle. That was the story of Apocalypse Now’s second loss of the season, both of them coming against the Tumbleweeds. After seeing another pass intercepted by the opposition, Jim Moore was heard to comment, “Look another Apocalypse Pass!” Late Hits: For the first time this year, all regular players were in attendance…Jeff Wrobleski extended his regular season point scoring streak to ten games. The last time Wrobo was left off the score sheet was on January 31, 2004 against Bloodshot.

Game 7 Apocalypse Now 8, Reapers 6

OLD EX - January 22, 2005 – The one thing more important for the Apocalypse Now than snapping their three-game winless streak Saturday afternoon was how they did it.  Getting back to playing sound defensive hockey, the Horsemen limited the Reapers to a bare minimum of shots in beating them 8-6.

The winning goal came from Myron Fiks in the third period. He worked himself into the clear and one-timed a speedy wrist shot over the Reaper goalie’s shoulder after being set up near the face-off dot by Jeff Wrobleski.  Late Hits: Due to a quirk in the schedule, Apocalypse had to endure a 5-hour interval between the two games they played on Saturday… Fiks notched his first hat-trick of the year.

Game 8 Apocalypse Now 7, Pylons 4

Old Ex - January 26, 2005 – Jim Heim became the first goaltender in Apocalypse Now history to record 50 wins, as the Apocalypse Now continued rolling with a 7-4 thumping of the Pylons.    Heimie (4-2-1) didn't have his best outing, but his offence backed him up in a big way to attain the milestone victory.  "It's a sense of relief after all the hype that's been going on," Heimie said. Late Hits: Apocalypse (5-2-1) has exceeded the number of wins from a year ago when they finished 4-9-1...With his first goal of the year, Jeff Wilkie moved into 14th place on the all-time scoring list, hurdling over Don Price and Mike Keating.

Game 9  Pylons 5, Apocalypse Now 2

Old Ex - February 2, 2005 – Apocalypse lost 5-2, and Jeff Wrobleski said it was an ugly one. "Our passing was horrible, and it was a horrible effort all around. We struggled to put the puck in the net. The talent is there, but the effort isn’t."  Everyone thought that Apocalypse had turned the corner. They thought the Gomer Pylons would be a great test, but they failed miserably. Late Hits: Wrobleski’s regular season point streak ended at 12 games as did his opportunity to break his own record. Wrobleski has the club record of 16 games in a row with a point and the record for most games with a point in one season

Game 10  Apocalypse Now 6, Totally Confused 3

Old Ex - February 5, 2005 – Jim Moore scored the 100th goal of his Sponge Hockey career Saturday afternoon.  Moore scored on a wrist shot in the third period of the Apocalypse’s 6-3 win to the Totally Confused.  Moore, who grew up in nearby St Vital, became the 5th player to score 100 or more goals. Family and friends were not on hand to watch him. Late Hits: Coincidentally, Rob Moore notched the 100th assist of his career when he set up Jim for his historic goal.

Game 11  Apocalypse Now 5, Bad Guys 4

Old Ex  - February 5, 2005 – Here’s a sure-fire way to win your share of hockey games. Have an efficient offence and a great goaltender. From the opening face-off to the final buzzer, Apocalypse Now hooked, held, obstructed and put five across their own blue line in a remarkable display of the way sponge hockey is played today – check check check hook hook hold.  The result was a 5-4 victory. Late Hits: Guy Sever exchanged punched with one of the Bad Guys but neither one received a penalty. The Bad Guy was thrown out of the game, however… Myron Fiks’ 1st goal of the game was also the 1500th goal scored in Apocalypse Now regular season history…Rob Moore became the first player to play in 300 regular season games.

Game 12  Goodfellas 6, Apocalypse Now 5

OLD EX - February 8, 2005 – Some pundits expected Apocalypse to get blown out by the Goodfellas, but the Horsemen played the yappers closer than expected. “I think we competed pretty darn hard,” Darren Warbeck said, who was called up at the last minute to replace Jim Heim. In fact, the Apocalypsers were leading with only a couple of minutes left in the game but then the wheels fell off.  Late Hits: Apocalypse Now has not played three goaltenders in one year since the 1997-98 year when Leo Silva, Terry Dean and Desmond Miller all started at least one game.

Game 13  Apocalypse Now 7, Grand Beach Beer Bellies 4

Valley Gardens - February 13, 2005 – Historic hockey rivals faced-off on Sunday afternoon as Apocalypse Now and the Grand Beach Beer Bellies took to the melting ice. Apocalypse went up 2-0 early in the game despite the late arrival of Guy Sever, Bryan Wiebe, Jeff Wrobleski and goaltender, Jim Heim. When they did turn up, Grand Beach popped in 2 quick ones to tie the game.  Patrick Nikolaus opened the scoring in the second period and it was off to the races. Jim Moore scored two second period goals to hand the Beer Bellies their 6rd straight defeat. ``We just have so many unselfish players,'' Moore said tongue in cheek. ``We don't care who scores, as long as someone does.'' LATE HITS:  Myron Fiks had a goal and three assists moving him into a tie for 1st place in the scoring race with Sever at 32 points.  It is the first time that Fiks has cracked the 30-point barrier in his 6 year career… Sever pulled a hamstring in the third period but is expected to start on Tuesday night.

Game 14  Goodfellas 3, Apocalypse Now 1

OLD EX  - February 15, 2005 - Apocalypse Now’s Myron Fiks locked up the team scoring title in a 3-1 loss to the Goodfellas.  Could the MVP award be next? Fiks averaged 2.5 points a game this season to edge out Guy Sever for the title. His unassisted goal early in the first period put him over the top and for a time it looked like it may have been the game winner. But defensive breakdowns in the third period allowed the Goodfellas to steal one from Apocalypse. Late Hits: After the game, Fiks was congratulated for his accomplishment but he let it be known that his first scoring title is no substitute for team success…Sever missed the game due to his hamstring injury while Bryan Wiebe was studying for his after-spongee career.

Game 1   Tumbleweeds 5, Apocalypse Now 0

OLD EX  - February 20, 2005 – The snow was falling and tempers were rising as Apocalypse Now fell 5-0 to the Tumbleweeds on Sunday afternoon in the first game of their best of three semi-final.  Tumbleweeds scored first on the powerplay and controlled the game from that moment on. Game Two will go on Tuesday night.  Goaltender, Jim Heim, who faced countless shots, said after the game, “I wish they (Tumbleweeds) weren’t so nice so I could hate them.” Jim Moore had a suggestion for the next game, “bring out Sanderson and we get four more games - bring him out or our season is OVER…”  If Mike Sanderson answers the call it would be a positive as he has seven points in two career play-off games. Late Hits: It has been 2 years since any team has shut out the Apocalypse Now. In February, 2003, they suffered a 9-0 humiliation from Frostbite.

Game 2  Tumbleweeds 6, Apocalypse Now 3

OLD EX  - February 22, 2005 – Heartache. Apocalypse Now’s dream is over. Cheers turned to tears across Winnipeg on Tuesday as their beloved team lost 6-3 in their A-side semifinal against the Tumbleweeds  "Where was Sanderson?,'' Jim Moore asked. “ This is a game we should have won, pretty much dominating from start to finish.” The Tumbleweeds sealed it with an empty-net goal with 45 seconds left.  Leftovers: The annual footrace was held after the game and Bryan Wiebe won the event with Grant Truthwaite finishing second. Guy Sever was still bothered by his hamstring … With his assist on Wiebe’s goal, Myron Fiks moved into 10th place on the all-time playoff scoring list passing Jeff Solylo. ... At two games, it was the shortest playoffs since the Grand Beach Beer Bellies swept Apocalypse in 2003.
