Game 1:  Reckless Faith 6, Apocalypse Now 6

The longest consecutive-games playing streak of any goaltender in Apocalypse Now history came to an end on Saturday morning. A snowstorm made the roads from Steinbach impassable and left Heimie stranded at home. As a result, Bryan Wiebe strapped on the pads for the first time in his career. "It was not an enjoyable experience", he sighed after the game that ended in a 6-6 draw. It appeared that the Apocalypse team were on their way to their first victory of the year but collapsed in the third period, allowing five goals and only scoring one. Notes: Jeff Wrobleski notched the 200th goal of his career. Guido moved into 4th place on the team all-time scoring list with his 4 points

Game 2: Yogic Flyers 11, Apocalypse Now 4

Wilkie the Boomer is showing that opposition goalies are going to live in fear this year as he caught the twine on two howitzers from the blue line in the second game of the season opening double-header. It wasn’t enough, however, as the Yogic Flyers scored 6 third period goals and came away with an 11-4 thrashing.  Notes: Apparently, the one-eyed Yogic Flyer is going to be fine after feeling the wrath of Joe’s stick.

Game 3: Homegrown 4, Apocalypse Now 3

A shorthanded goal by Homegrown in the second period proved to be the undoing of an Apocalypse Now team that would not go down easy. Jim Heim put in a stellar performance in his first start after digging out from last week’s snowstorm. It wasn’t enough however as Homegrown edged Apocalypse, 4-3, in a physical contest. Notes: Jeff Wrobleski was assessed a 5 minute slashing penalty in the 3rd period. It is unusual to see Wrobleski leading the team in penalty minutes.

Game 4: Frosted Flakes 1, Apocalypse Now 5

January 14, 2004 – Apocalypse Now found more open space than usual against the Frosted Flakes. With goals from five different players, Apocalypse notched their first win of the season with a 5-1 victory Wednesday night over the Flakes. Myron Fiks, playing on the top line with Guy Sever and Rob Burnett scored the winning goal. ``To be honest, we play so many tight-checking games, it was nice to actually have some room to wheel,'' Myron said. Notes: Burnett was playing in his 50th regular season game for Apocalypse. It was Guido’s 75th game.

Game 5: Bloodshot 0, Apocalypse Now 4

January 17, 2004 – Jimmy Heim made his first shutout of the season look easy. Heim stopped several shots for his 3rd career shutout in the Apocalypse Now’s 4-0 victory over the Bloodshots on Saturday night. ``Sometimes the puck hits you and sometimes it doesn't, and tonight was one of those nights,'' Heim said. ``I saw most of the shots and the guys played really well in front of me." Notes: Lost in the excitement of Heim’s shut-out was the fact that Guy Sever scored his 100th career goal.

Game 6:  Frosted Flakes 4, Apocalypse Now 3

January 21, 2004 – Apocalypse get rough, then tumble 4-3. A lack of discipline and an inability to finish scoring chances proved costly for Apocalypse Now and led to a third-period meltdown on a cold Wednesday night. Apocalypse saw their two-game winning streak end with a 4-3 loss to the previously winless Frosted Flakes. The referee let the physical, chippy play go on in the first period which set the tone for the game. The Flakes took advantage and scored on a power play early in the third period and held on for the win. Late Hits: Myron, Wilkie and Jim were all out of the line-up for various reasons… It was a cold one out there. Game time conditions: -32 degrees (not including windchill).

Game 7:  Blue Devilz 3, Apocalypse Now 10

January 24, 2004 – Myron Fiks and Guy Sever each scored a hat trick as the Apocalypse Now routed the Blue Develz 10-3 Saturday night. As has been the Devilz problem throughout the season, its defense and goaltending faltered. ``That was awful,'' one of the Devilz was heard muttering as he left the ice following the game. It was the second hat trick of the season for Guido and thirteenth of his career. Curt Burnett also scored twice including the game winner. Late Hits: Fiks returned after missing Wednesday's game after being sent down to Utah and notched the 50th goal of his career in his 54th game…. Defenceman, Jim Moore also returned after domestic life caused him to miss two games.

Game 8: Assmen 4, Apocalypse Now 1

Valley Gardens  - January 25, 2004 – Pain in the Assman - Apocalypse Now’s Jim Moore unloaded a vicious elbow to the head of the Assmen’s #9 in the second period of Sunday night’s 4-1 loss to the Assmen. The little guy was carted off the ice by his teammates after he was knocked cold by the Apocalypse Now defenceman in the penalty filled game at Valley Gardens. Moore was issued a five-minute penalty for the slip-up. "I didn't really mean to elbow him," he said with a wink. "His nose just happened to be at the same height of my elbow." Late Hits: The Assmen scored on a penalty shot in the 3rd period to make it 4-1. It was the first ever penalty shot scored on Jim Heim in 6 tries. He stopped 2 in 94-95, 2 in 01-02 and 1 in 02-03… Guido was unable to answer with his penalty shot attempt.

Game 9: Assmen 5, Apocalypse 4

Old Ex  - January 30, 2004 –On paper (toilet paper?), Apocalypse Now should have no problem with the Assmen. On the ice, it's another matter. The Assmen gained a lead on Apocalypse in the 13th Division standings by rear-ending them 5-4 on Friday night. Apocalypse was trailing 3-0 in the 2nd period when Rob Burnett started the comeback by scoring his 1st goal of the night from a scramble in front. Apocalypse eventually evened the score but after the loss of Guy Sever due to a game misconduct for fighting, they could not turn it into a win. The Assmen have now won 2 straight against Apocalypse. Late Hits: 35 minutes of penalties is a new record for most minutes in one game. It surpasses the 2001-02 game vs. X-Men with 34 minutes. (Guido had 26 minutes in that game, so he did not beat his own record).

Game 10: Bloodshot 12, Apocalypse Now 4

Old Ex - January 31, 2004 –After 179 consecutive regular season games, 216 consecutive games including playoffs...Rob Moore didn't show up. The entire Apocalypse squad was in total shock. Blood Shot saw the opportunity and jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead early in the first. By the time Apocalypse had come to their senses, it was too late. A humiliating 12-4 loss brought the reality of B-Side playoffs a lot closer. "Hey, that means I must be the new Ironman!" Guido exclaimed after the game. But in actual fact, Guido went to Texas during the 2000-01 season and has now played only 43 consecutive regular season games. The official new IronMan is at 72 consecutive season games. Jeff Wrobleski has not missed an Apocalypse game since twisting his ankle in a co-ed game during the 1999 Super Bowl. Jeff missed a playoff game in 2000, but his regular season string is 5 years and running. In Game 8 of the 2011-12 season, Jeff will surpass Rob for the new record. Moore may never be mentioned in the same breath as Lou Gehrig or Cal Ripken Jr. or Doug Jarvis but his reign as Apocalypse’s "ironman", was a signal achievement Late Hits: Jim Heim took a penalty late in the game in frustration as he realized that his shot at getting his 50th career win this year was slipping away…Bryan Wiebe has been awarded an assist in the Blue Devilz game on January 24th that was mistakenly given to Wrobleski.

Apocalypse, coming off an embarrassing 12-4 loss at home against Bloodshot, outshot the Faith in the opening period and took the early lead. Late Hits: Seven different players registered goals for the Apocalypse, who had not won since beating the Devilz on January 24th. …Curt Burnett, a free-agent signing last winter, notched his 4th goal of the year.

February 7, 2004 –The Homegrowns took another step toward their first ever division title. They overpowered Apocalypse Now for the second time this season and walked away with an 8-3 victory. ``There's just too much talent out there with the puck," Jim Moore said later, "We hung Heimie out to dry and they capitalized.'' Late Hits: Jeff Wrobleski benefited on the first of 2 powerplay chances by redirecting Jim Moore’s pass into a gaping net…Myron has registered a point in all 11 games that he’s played this year. He has seven points in the last four games.

Game 13: Yogic Flyers 8, Apocalypse Now 1

February 15, 2004 Sunday’s game saw the visiting Apocalypse Now take a lead of 1-0 -- as Jeff Wrobleski scored once in the first period -- and try to hang on. "It was 1-0 for the longest time," he said afterwards. Apocalypse was forced to play two men short after losing Joe Moore to injury early in the first period. The Apocalypse centre suffered a fractured arm after falling into the boards and Rob Moore took him to the hospital. This seemed to ignite the Flyers comeback as they scored 8 unanswered goals the rest of the way and came away with an 8-1 beating. Late Hits: For the first time this year, Guido and Myron were both left off the score sheet… Jeff Wilkie arrived in time to play the last minute of the game…Jim Heim was playing in his 100th game in goal…Over three decades, Joe Moore has paid a price. Fractured arm, fractured hand, and fractured collarbone. "Fender benders," Moore termed the injuries. Senior consultant of orthopaedics, Dr Rennie, said Moore had suffered "grievous fractures" in the incident and it would take some time to mend. But he was happy to note that Moore was a healthy young man who was taking everything in a positive spirit. He said it would take 10 to 12 weeks for full recovery. When asked how quickly Moore would be able to resume his spongee career, Dr Rennie observed, "Let us hope for the best".

Game 14: Blue Devilz 4, Apocalypse Now 3

February 15, 2004 – I will spare you a long-winded recounting of the debacle on Sinclair Ave on Sunday morning. But I will point you towards the true root causes for the disgusting loss.  Apocalypse failed to clog their own slot time and time again. How often do they continue to chase the puck and get caught out of position?  Hellacious, juicy rebounds by Jim Heim, who was having an all-star season. Fancy cross-ice passes that backfired into Devilz odd-man rushes. mmThe problem is that these errors aren't isolated. They're chronic and when errors repeat, it is no longer a reflection of the individuals making the mistakes. It points to a systemic problem with leadership, with attitude, with dedication, with accountability. There is a certain arrogance, a swagger to this team suggesting they believe themselves to be better than they are. Forget the excuses. Truth is truth.  Late Hits: Apocalypse will play their first play-off game on Saturday night, February 21st … The Blue Devilz finished the season with a record of 3-9-2 for 8 points. Apocalypse finished with a record of 4-9-1 for 9 points. Apocalypse survived another year without finishing last.

Apocalypse Now 2003-04 Play-off Results

Semi-Final Game 1: Blue Devilz 2 , Apocalypse Now 3(OT)

Old Ex - February 21, 2004 – In a game as exciting and finely played as any sport can produce, Jim Heim stopped all four shots he faced in the overtime shootout, and Rob Burnett and Jim Moore beat the little goalie as the Apocalypse Now defeated the Blue Devilz 3-2 Saturday night at Old Ex. "Nobody can beat the Heiminator. He's the man," Curt Burnett said, referring to Heim. "In big games like this, he's outstanding."   The Blue Devilz scored early on a questionable goal that was tipped in with a high stick. The Devilz scored again on the powerplay to build up a 2-0 lead. The Devilz and their young minds thinking the game was over went into a defensive shell and decided to play keep away for the last period. With the teams at four on four, Rob Burnett cut the gap to 2-1. Shortly after, Bryan Wiebe sent it to overtime with a nifty wristshot past a sprawling goalie. Robbie Burnett filled with confidence, went first in the shootout and scored what would turn out to be the game winner. Jim Heim easily stonewalled their powder puff shots. Wilkie not knowing what to do from so close in was foiled and Wrobo had their goalie beat cleanly but hit him in the arm. Jim Moore, suffering from the flu, walked in slowly at the goalie and calmly shuffled to the side a bit and flipped the puck over him to salt the victory for Apocalypse.  Late Hits: - The Molson three stars were Rob Burnett with his two goals, Jim Heim for shutting the Devilz out in the shootout and Jim Moore for his overtime goal and defensive effort at the end of the third period.

Semi-Final Game 2: Blue Devilz 3, Apocalypse Now 4 (OT)

February 25, 2004 – If you hang around long enough, good things can happen. That was the philosophy employed by Apocalypse Now in their 4-3 double-overtime shoot-out win against the Blue Devilz on Wednesday night. It was their second overtime win of the series. Myron Fiks potted the winner with the team’s eighth shot of the 2 round shoot-out to allow Apocalypse to advance to the B-side final. The opener is on Saturday night.
Though Apocalypse dominated play late in the game, the Devilz drew first blood on a weak backhand by Semenko from the left slot. The Devilz second shot of the game seemed to catch goalie Jim Heim off-guard and trickled in just crossing the line. Guy Sever, who missed the first game as he was stuck in Grand Forks, answered with two quick goals that provided a big lift to the team. Apocalypse went ahead on a tally from Myron but the Devilz benefited from a lucky goal late in the 3rd period that Heimie had no chance on. "There was never any doubt in my mind," he said afterwards, "I knew we were going to win if it went to a shoot-out." Late Hits: From an officiating perspective, the first period of last night's game picked up where the first game left off -- with the referee having the whistle grafted to his lips. Jeff Wilkie was assessed his first career penalty for a flimsy interference call behind the net.

B-Side Final: Game 1: Bloodshot 3, Apocalypse Now 6

Pioneer Arena  - April 7, 2004 – Apocalypse Now captured its first Sponge Hockey Championship in the last 14 years with a typically relentless 6-3 victory over the Bloodshots in the Final game, delayed by a month and played indoors due to unseasonably warm weather.  Buoyed by a huge effort by Guy Sever – four goals including the game-winner and an assist -- and more timely saves from goaltender, Jim Heim, the Apocalypse were unbeatable on the ice of Pioneer Arena. "This was all the more rewarding because of the ages of the players involved." Jeff Wrobleski said afterwards, "We’re old."
Trailing 1-0 early in the game, Bloodshot responded with a goal off a turnover, but Sever made it 2-1 before the end of the period. Some of the Bloodshot players were out on day parole and Jeff Wilkie was their first victim. He was ejected from the game with 8 seconds left in the 1st period for defending himself. Bloodshot had no spares left and Apocalypse took advantage, with unmerciful pressure. The Bloodshot centre decided to take it out on the referee late in the game and that was all she wrote. Apocalypse wins! Late Hits: The only remaining members of the 1989-90 Championship team are Joe Moore, Rob Moore and Jeff Wrobleski… The entire team met after the game for a few celebratory cocktails at the Green Briar. Curt Burnett even had some champagne.
